Description

"A Child Is Born" is a recreation (not a reproduction) of a painting by Italian artist Andrea Solari or Solario. It is hand-painted digitally - after significant adjustments and the application of several filters - in a style more like the Impressionist Cezanne than Solario's original. As with most of my paintings, this one required many individual layers and multiple painting programs and filters to achieve the end result. As I have said elsewhere, religious art dominated the art world of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Apart from portraiture, one would have been hard put to find much else until the 1600s when the Dutch school ushered in a golden age of maritime painting and homey scenes from farms and villages. This painting - a recreation of a very famous Andrea Solario painting "Virgin of the Green Cushion" - is typical of its day. Painted in 1510, Solario's works are indicative of the Milanese school of art. Another, probably even more famous painting of his, is "Salome with the Head of John the Baptist."

This painting, as with most of my digital paintings, is an ORIGINAL work of art created entirely on a Wacom tablet using a number of different painting programs and various genres of painting styles overlaid upon each other, much the same as the old printing process of chromolithography. In this case, the reference image is a painting in the public domain available through Wikipedia.

Because the final creations are entirely digital in nature they are considered to be original art work, not reproductions. According to the International Association of Fine Art Digital Print Makers (IAFADP), "An original digital print is not based upon using original artwork outside of the computer. The artist may use elements as source materials, such as photographs, drawings or other appropriated images (those in the public domain), but THE FINAL FORM OF THE WORK EXISTS ONLY IN THE COMPUTER AND AS THE FINAL PRINT OR AS AN EDITION OF PRINTS." Furthermore, according to ArtBusiness.com, there is a distinct difference in value between a print/scan of an original watercolor, painting or photograph "...as opposed to original digital works of art created by digital artists entirely or in part on computers which ARE considered to be unique."

A signed and numbered Certificate of Authenticity is available for each canvas indicating title of the work, my name, date of creation, a thumbnail of the painting, the origin of original work if the painting is a derivative, the number of your print in the limited printing and a guarantee that the work will no longer be available to the public in a canvas format once a total of 25 canvas prints are sold from all potential vendors.
