Brass Kettle with Blue Bottles After Carlsen

Brass Kettle with Blue Bottles After Carlsen

Digital Art - Digital Painting/photographic Art
Description
This still life is hand-painted digitally from a composite of public domain images, primarily a painting called Copper Kettle by American artist, Sorin Emil Carlsen. Using a variety of painting styles, each layer of canvas is overlaid on the earlier work, filters applied and opacity adjusted. The whole is overlaid again with textures. This is not a "faithful reproduction" as elements have been added and the style is unique to digital painting. The original painting from which these elements have been adapted showed a copper kettle rather than brass and the small samovar and oranges were not in the original.
Emil Carlsen (1853 - 1932) was definitely one of the finest still life painters in the United States. After studying in Paris, Carlsen adopted what he called a "moody, simplified style" of still life painting, unlike the hyper-realism of the trompe l'oeil (illusionist) style that had been popular since the post-Civil War period. There were three major themes that dominated Carlsen's works - ordinary household objects, fish and game, and floral arrangements. Carlsen's "best known works were of copper or brass pots, undistinguished vessels and vegetables, given plenty of space and arranged on undefined, non-reflective surfaces. Carlsen's lighting was usually low, and because he worked in a narrow range of values, the resulting works were relaxed and moody, giving the viewer a sense of tranquility." (http://www.emilcarlsen.com/stilllife.html)
According to Carlsen: "Beauty is ever present like the light of the sun - even in the most humble object, only it takes an artist's vision to detect it, and an artist's skill to reproduce it."
From Wikipedia:
A still life (plural still lifes) is a work of art depicting mostly inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects which may be either natural (food, flowers, dead animals, plants, rocks, or shells) or man-made (drinking glasses, books, vases, jewelry, coins, pipes, and so on). With origins in the Middle Ages and Ancient Greco-Roman art, still-life painting emerged as a distinct genre and professional specialization in Western painting by the late 16th century, and has remained significant since then. Still life gives the artist more freedom in the arrangement of elements within a composition than do paintings of other types of subjects such as landscape or portraiture.

This painting is an ORIGINAL digital art work created on the computer from a reproduction photograph of a painting in the public domain, hand-painted on a Wacom tablet using a variety of painting styles and digital mediums. (See longer explanation below of why this qualifies as an original even if it is based on an image in the public domain).

I am a western New York based artist with a passion for the sea and a deep love for the natural world around me. My paintings are sometimes based on images in the public domain or on elements from classic art work. Other paintings are based on original photographs. All are painted on a Wacom tablet using a variety of painting programs and filters and because the final creations are entirely digital in nature they are considered to be original art work not reproductions.
According to the International Association of Fine Art Digital Print Makers (IAFADP), "An original digital print is not based upon using original artwork outside of the computer. The artist may use elements as source materials, such as photographs, drawings or other appropriated images, but THE FINAL FORM OF THE WORK EXISTS ONLY IN THE COMPUTER AND AS THE FINAL PRINT OR AS AN EDITION OF PRINTS." Furthermore, as explained by George Whale and Naren Barfield in a speech to the IAFADP in 2001, "with an electronic pen (stylus), drawings and paintings can be created entirely on the computer using synthetic tools and materials, many of which have their own distinctive qualities." And according to ArtBusiness.com, there is a distinct difference in value between a print/scan of an original watercolor, painting or photograph "...as opposed to original digital works of art created by digital artists entirely or in part on computers which ARE considered to be unique." Similarly, the International Fine Print Dealers Association states, "The IFPDA defines an original print as a work of art on paper which has been conceived by the artist to be realized as a print, rather than as a reproduction of a work in another medium." This is exactly how I create my original works and each painting is the result of many layers of hand-painting in various styles (impasto, pen and ink, digital oils, etc.) then overlaid upon one another.
You can purchase quality traditional style fine art prints of these digital paintings, giclee canvas prints, acrylic and metallic prints by Lianne Schneider. They are beautiful and stylish decor for any wall in your home, office or lobby. My most sincere apologies to those who have recently left comments. I am just now home after the snow storm blocked my return by five days. It will take me some time to catch up but I wanted to thank you all now until I can find time to visit each of you.
