Description

A unique digital interpretation of a painting of "Fishing Boats Beating Up to Windward" by Edward Moran - hand painted digitally with adaptations and additions to the original (therefore it is not an exact "reproduction"). Moran's paintings are in the public domain. Many were printed as chromolithographs by publisher Louis Prang. and you'll note the sharp difference in color, the change in the sky, unique brushwork and the addition of the promontory and lighthouse on the right.

Like many of my most recent paintings, this digital painting is accomplished in layers similar to the process of chromolithography. It consists of 5 different layers of painting - beginning with an abstract oil, then an aged realistic oil paint, an Impressionist oil, a bristle brush thin impasto, and ending fine brush thick oil over the previous layers. Further refinement was accomplished in Photoshop with a number of filters and changes in layer opacity. In this sense, as well as the fact that certain elements have been added to Moran's painting, it is totally original and not a reproduction. Unquestionably, Moran's painting is the primary reference and inspiration for my version.

Born in Bolton, England, Edward Moran moved to the Philadelphia area and at the age of 15 became apprenticed to the great maritime painter, James Hamilton. With his younger brother, Thomas, he returned to England to study at the Royal Academy and the Paris Academy. All three of Edward Moran's younger brothers were painters, Thomas achieving the greatest success and following.

Regardless of his brother's success, Edward Moran's career, particularly as a maritime artist, was also brilliantly successful. He also painted landscapes and historical subjects and one of his more famous pieces is a painting of the Unveiling of the Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World. According to Wikipedia, "He became best known for his seascapes that showed a strong influence by Turner. A series he created of thirteen paintings of important epochs in American maritime history were widely exhibited and later were acquired by the New York Public Library, helping to establish Edward Moran as one of the most important marine artists of the period.

Moran's marine paintings are dramatically conceived, with brilliant sunsets, vibrant blue green seas and glowing background color." In the 1870s, Moran began to experiment with a technique called luminism, defined as "the use of filtered light, hazy brushwork, and the portrayal of mood over subject." Many of his works center on New York harbor where he spent most of his active career and where he died in 1901. All of Moran's paintings were completed prior to 1923 and the artist has been dead for more than 100 years making all of his artworks available without restriction and in the public domain.

This painting is an ORIGINAL digital art work created on the computer from a "slavish photographic copy" of a public domain painting, recreated and hand-painted on a Wacom tablet using a variety of painting styles and digital mediums. I am a western New York based artist with a passion for the sea and a deep love for the natural world around me. My paintings are sometimes based on images in the public domain or on elements from classic art work. Other paintings are based on original photographs. All are painted on a Wacom tablet using a variety of painting programs and filters and because the final creations are entirely digital in nature they are considered to be original art work not reproductions.

According to the International Association of Fine Art Digital Print Makers (IAFADP), "An original digital print is not based upon using original artwork outside of the computer. The artist may use elements as source materials, such as photographs, drawings or other appropriated images, but THE FINAL FORM OF THE WORK EXISTS ONLY IN THE COMPUTER AND AS THE FINAL PRINT OR AS AN EDITION OF PRINTS." Furthermore, as explained by George Whale and Naren Barfield in a speech to the IAFADP in 2001, "with an electronic pen (stylus), drawings and paintings can be created entirely on the computer using synthetic tools and materials, many of which have their own distinctive qualities." And according to ArtBusiness.com, there is a distinct difference in value between a print/scan of an original watercolor, painting or photograph "...as opposed to original digital works of art created by digital artists entirely or in part on computers which ARE considered to be unique." Similarly, the International Fine Print Dealers Association states, "The IFPDA defines an original print as a work of art on paper which has been conceived by the artist to be realized as a print, rather than as a reproduction of a work in another medium." This is exactly how I create my original works and each painting is the result of many layers of hand-painting in various styles (impasto, pen and ink, digital oils, etc.) then overlaid upon one another.
